Hiring
All potential student employees must fully complete a Student Employment Application. Experience and grades will be taken into consideration.
The student application is presented to the Faculty Board of Directors by the Student Supervising Director with a recommendation.
The student must receive endorsement from at least three of the four Directors.
If approved, the student will then fill out a Student Profile and have his/her credentials approved and where necessary tested to determine hiring level. An initial Student Employee Status Number (SESN) will be determined based on the students qualifications, grades, and experience. Students will be hired as a Student Worker at minimum wage if their SESN is below 800 or as a Student Programmer at $8.00 per hour if their SESN is equal to or above 800.
Qualifications
All student employees working from September through May must be full time IUP students (either undergraduate or graduate) in good standing in the semester in which they are working. All student employees working from June through August must be enrolled as IUP summer school students, have been full time IUP students (either undergraduate or graduate) in good standing in the previous Spring semester, or have graduated in the Spring semester.
Evaluations
Each student will be given an initial Overall Evaluation Multiplier (OEM) of 1.00.
This factor will be adjusted each time an evaluation is performed by multiplying the OEM by the Current Evaluation Multiplier (CEM).
The OEM cannot go below .80 or over 1.20.
The CEM cannot be below .90 or over 1.10.
Evaluations should be done every four months or after major milestones in a project. It is the responsibility of the student to see that evaluations are done.
Evaluations may be done by either Student Professional Staff or Faculty as determined by the Faculty Board of Directors.
All evaluations and CEM must be approved by three of the four Faculty Directors.
A written summary of the approved evaluation and the CEM must be provided and placed in the student's employment folder.
The OEM will be multiplied by the CEM to get a new OEM.
Receiving Pay Raises
A student worker's Student Employee Status Number (SESN) determines the salary level. To be hired as a Student Programmer the SESN must be at least 800. This gives the student a salary of $8.00 per hour.
After the first evaluation an Evaluated Student Employee Status Number (ESESN) is calculated. It is the product of the Student Employee Status Number (SESN) and the Overall Evaluation Multiplier (OEM). The ESESN changes each time an evaluation is done (when the CEM changes) or when the student's credentials are updated and the SESN changes.
Raises are given in $0.25 increments. When the ESESN go over any number divisible by 25 (25, 50, 75, 00), the student is eligible for a raise of $0.25. It is the student's responsibility to apply for this raise.
A student cannot be given a raise more often that every three months.
Normally only single implement raises are given. Multiple increment raises must be approved by at least three of the four Faculty Directors.
When a student reaches the $9.50 per hour level, she/he is eligible to apply for a title change to Student Professional Staff. Again it is the student's responsibility to apply for this. Promotion to Student Profession Staff must be approved by three of the four Faculty Directors.
Updating Credentials - Changing the SESN
The Student Employee Status Number can be changed by the updating of a student's credentials at any of the following times:
It is the student's responsibility to update her/his credentials by submitting the appropriate materials to the Student Mentorship Co-Director. The credentials update will be reviewed and tested where necessary.
Changes in the Student Employee Status Number must be approved by three of the four Faculty directors.
Documentation of the updating of credentials must be placed in the student's employment folder.
Termination
Student workers may be terminated for any of the following reasons:
All student terminations must be recommended by a member of the Faculty Board of Directors and approved by at least three of the four Directors.
